For years, Ghana has grappled with persistent sanitation challenges, with Accra bearing the brunt of the crisis. Despite the establishment of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation to address these issues, people living in Accra are still battling the tumultuous sanitation problems, exacerbating during the rainy season.

Kojo Sarpong, the founder of the Buz Stop Boys speaking to RGGNEWS, describes Accra’s sanitation state as an eyesore, emphasizing that the rainy season worsens the issue by washing waste from gutters onto the streets. He stresses the importance of Ghanaians being intentional about proper waste disposal and urges the government to provide more refuse bins at strategic locations while empowering district assemblies to manage sanitation effectively.

Also, Mr. George Yorke head of policy at WaterAid Ghana acknowledges the severity of the sanitation problem, highlighting Ghana’s lagging position compared to global sanitation goals set for 2030.

The current state of sanitation in Accra is dire due to inadequate waste management infrastructure in households, and intensifying during the rainy season. Unapproved construction further compounds the problem, contributing to flooding in the city. The implications are significant, with migration adding to Accra’s population growth and underscoring the urgent need for improved waste management systems. Mr. Yorke stresses the depoliticization of sanitation issues, calling for strict enforcement of laws to address the crisis effectively.

In light of these challenges, prompt action is necessary to curb Accra’s sanitation crisis. Efforts must focus on enhancing waste management infrastructure, enforcing regulations, and raising awareness about responsible waste disposal practices.

Only through concerted efforts can Accra overcome its sanitation woes and pave the way for a cleaner, healthier future.
