Supporters of Ebi Bright, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Tema Central, have mounted a strong defense of her nomination as Mayor of the Tema Municipal Assembly, rejecting claims that question her suitability based on her ethnic background.
Earlier this month, a section of NDC members and some traditional leaders protested her nomination, arguing that she does not qualify as an “indigene” of Tema. In response, Team Ebi released a press statement on April 15, describing the accusations as “deeply unfortunate” and “an insult to generations of authentic Ghanaian heritage.”
Supporters firmly asserted that Ebi Bright holds Ghanaian citizenship by birth and heritage. They pointed out that both her maternal and paternal roots connect her to the Ga-Adangbe ethnic group, with her patrilineal ancestry tracing back to a respected Anlo-Ewe family from Anyako in the Volta Region.
“Hon. Ebi Bright stands proudly as a Ga-Adangbe woman by lineage, birth, and heritage,” the statement declared. “Her cultural roots firmly align with the values and identity of the Tema community, and her upbringing in Tema reflects her deep understanding of the people’s traditions and aspirations.”
The team dismissed the outsider label some critics have tried to attach to her, emphasizing her strong family ties to Greater Accra and the Volta Region. “Any attempt to erase or question her identity not only misrepresents the truth but also insults her heritage,” they stated.
Supporters highlighted her long-standing record of leadership and community service in Tema. They cited her unwavering loyalty to the Tema Traditional Council, consistent advocacy for youth and women empowerment, and tangible support through street lights, job placements, healthcare assistance, and technical education programs.
“For more than a decade, Ebi Bright has stood with the people of Tema,” a team member said. “Her development work speaks volumes, and her leadership continues to bring visibility and hope to many groups in the municipality.”
Team Ebi called on residents of Tema and all Ghanaians to reject divisive politics rooted in misinformation and exclusion. They urged the public to support leadership based on merit, vision, and integrity.
“Tema deserves the best,” the statement concluded. “And with Hon. Ebi Bright, the future rests in capable, compassionate, and visionary hands.”
