The Achimota Circuit Court has granted bail to Mohammed Zakou, a known activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following his arrest for allegedly spreading false information about the death of Vice President Prof. Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Zakou was arrested on Saturday after publishing a Facebook post captioned “Rest Well Her Excellency”, accompanied by crying emojis. Authorities interpreted the post as a deliberate false announcement regarding the Vice President’s death. Government communications have confirmed that the Vice President has recently been unwell, but there has been no official report of her passing.
He has been charged with the publication of false news. According to a prosecutor from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Zakou admitted to making the post but claimed it was meant to express sympathy and well wishes—not to suggest that the Vice President had died.
Appearing before the court on Monday, Zakou’s legal team, led by Gary Nimako Marfo, appealed for bail. The state did not oppose the application but requested that the bail conditions ensure the accused remains available for trial.
The court subsequently granted bail with two sureties to the tune of GHc 100,000 and directed that Zakou report to the investigator once every week.
The case has been adjourned to May 12 for a case management conference.
