President-elect John Dramani Mahama has raised concerns about the state of Ghana’s energy sector, urging immediate reforms to prevent economic instability.
During a meeting with Canada’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Myriam Montrat, in Accra on Thursday, December 19, Mr. Mahama described the sector’s challenges as a threat to national progress.
“The energy sector needs urgent surgery; otherwise, it can collapse everything,” he said, stressing the importance of efficiency and sustainability in energy supply.
Mr. Mahama also criticised the outgoing government for its handling of economic recovery, highlighting a $2.5 billion energy sector debt that he warned could undermine any perceived progress.
“You have a $2.5 billion debt, your bailout is only $3 billion, and you say the economy is turning around,” he remarked, questioning the credibility of the administration’s claims.
He cautioned that unresolved energy sector challenges could erase gains made, calling for a shift in focus to realistic and sustainable solutions.
