The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticized comments made by Dela Edem, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, targeting former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
The NPP, in a statement signed by its National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, described the remarks as “despicable, shameful, and disgraceful,” condemning them in no uncertain terms. The statement follows comments by Mr. Edem on TV XYZ, where he reportedly referred to President Kufuor as “evil” and attributed his use of a wheelchair to a curse.
The party expressed disappointment in the NDC’s leadership, particularly its flagbearer, John Mahama, for remaining silent on the issue. The NPP called on Mr. Mahama to demonstrate leadership by taking disciplinary action against Mr. Edem.
“The deafening silence of the NDC’s flagbearer, John Mahama, and the leadership of the party days after Mr. Edem’s disgraceful conduct cannot be overlooked. Former President Mahama must show leadership and institute the necessary disciplinary actions against his darling boy,” the statement read.
The NPP also highlighted the significant contributions of former President Kufuor to Ghana’s development, citing initiatives such as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), School Feeding Program, Capitation Grant, and Free Maternal Care. The party emphasized that Mr. Kufuor’s legacy has earned him admiration both locally and globally.
The statement urged the NDC to condemn the remarks publicly and issue an apology to the former President, warning that failure to do so could “pollute the political atmosphere” ahead of the December elections.
The NPP reiterated its commitment to maintaining a respectful and issue-based campaign as the nation approaches the polls.
