The National Identification Authority (NIA) has reiterated that the first-time issuance of the Ghana Card remains free at its 276 district offices across the country.
In a public notice, the authority encouraged citizens to take advantage of the free service to avoid unnecessary costs while ensuring widespread access to the national identification system.
However, the NIA clarified that charges apply for first-time card issuance at its Premium Centres, following parliamentary approval in 2023. Under the new fee structure, applicants at these centres will pay GH₵310.00 for a new card, GH₵125.00 for a replacement, and GH₵420.00 for record updates that require card reissuance. A nationality update will cost GH₵70.00.
Despite these charges at Premium Centres, the NIA assured that general record updates at district offices remain free. The authority also highlighted the importance of the Ghana Card in accessing government services, financial transactions, and strengthening national security.
The NIA urged the public to make use of the free issuance at district offices to avoid unnecessary expenses.
