New year school to establish a Digital Youth Village

The Director of the 75th New Year School, Dr. Simon Peter Kafui Aheto, says construction of a digital youth village is in the offing.
According to the director, five acres of land has been allocated by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana to establish such infrastructure to benefit all Ghanaian youth.
Commemorating its 75th year, the Annual New Year School and Conference unfolded from January 7th to 9th, 2024, at the ISSER conference room on the UG campus.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia inaugurated the program, representing the president on the first day.
Dr. Aheto emphasized the conference’s inclusivity, involving stakeholders from education, the ministries and civil society organisations to address common issues.
Highlighting achievements, he mentioned the NHIS policy originating from the New Year School and its contributions to other policies.
“It will interest you that the NHIS policy was born out of the new year school, and there are some other policies,” he stated.
Addressing sustainable development, Dr. Aheto noted a focus on SDG goals 4 and 17, with participant-driven discussions encompassing additional objectives. “In terms of sustainable development, this year we are hinging on 4, and 17. Sometimes the paricipants drive the discussions covering all the other goals,” Mr. Aheto said.
For Vice President Dr Bawumia, the Digital Youth Village on the Legon campus is expected to boost digital entrepreneurship among the youth, while serving as a centre of excellence for learning, innovation and creativity
