The Vice President of Imani Africa, Mr. Selorm Branttie has alleged that there is an individual at the Scholarship Secretariat charging GH¢70,000 before approving the scholarship.

He has called on the Office of the Special Prosecutor, headed by Kissi Agyebeng to probe the matter urgently to bring perpetrators to book.

Mr. Branttie urged the OSP to launch a swift investigation into his claims as it will help weed out corruption in the country.

“Dear OSP: There is someone at the scholarships secretariat who charges GH¢70k to approve scholarships,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Meanwhile, the Scholarship secretariat has come under scrutiny in recent days following a list of beneficiaries alleging that a significant number of the awardees were government officials.

The Deputy Ranking Member of the Education Committee of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak, in a news report carried by rainbowradioonline.com disclosed that he has personally received several complaints of extortion at the scholarship secretariat.

He alleged that applicants had to pay between Ghc80,000 and Ghc100,000 before their application for scholarships was approved.

Dr. Apaak has since urged all individuals with information about their experiences of extortion to reach out so he can follow up on the matter.

Prior to his comments, a group calling itself Students with Special Needs at the University of Ghana (UG) in a press statement on August 28th, 2023 signed by the leader of the group, Gilbert Boateng Agyare called for the removal of the Registrar at Scholarship Secretariat over bursary delays.

“We wish to apprise the government that for more than three years running, all students with special needs at the University of Ghana totalling about 200 have not received their bursary due to fundamental flippancy on the part of the registrar towards the issues of special needs students in the country,” parts of their statements read.
