The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) says individuals contributing to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) will no longer have to pay registration and renewal fees for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). This idea behind this change is to simplify the enrollment process for NHIS and improve access to healthcare in Ghana. Integration of NHIS with SSNIT and the National Identification Authority (NIA) is expected to streamline the process. SSNIT contributors will be automatically registered through text messages, and the use of Ghana Card Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) is expected to benefit subscribers and strengthen the NHIS.
Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), emphasized the significance of this initiative. He says it aims to extend healthcare access to an additional 1.3 million Ghanaians who contribute to SSNIT but are not currently part of the health insurance scheme. Additionally, Mr. Ahiagbah highlighted that Dr Bawumia’s Bold Solutions will enhance coverage under the scheme and improve health outcomes for Ghanaians.
