The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has stated that the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration established a debt service reserve account to manage funds for debt payments.
In a post on X, he explained that this account utilizes surplus funds from Treasury bill auctions, budgetary allocations for debt servicing, and transfers from the sinking fund to fulfill debt obligations.
Mr. Ahiagbah noted that the debt service reserve account has facilitated the payment of three Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) coupons totaling approximately GH₵27 billion during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure. Additionally, it holds GH₵6.1 billion allocated for the February coupon payment, which has been authorized by President Mahama.
Mr. Ahiagbah suggested that the current structure is already effective in building debt buffers, in contrast to recent directives from President Mahama to Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to create a new account.
