Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin has been re-elected as Chair of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL), as the 2nd General Assembly concluded on October 27 in Accra.
His re-election reflects strong support from African legislative heads, gathered to advance shared priorities for the continent.
In his address, Speaker Bagbin urged African parliaments to unite in tackling critical challenges such as economic stability, climate resilience, and security. Referencing Africa’s post-independence gatherings, he emphasized CoSPAL’s role in fostering partnerships across African and global bodies. “Our parliaments cannot sit on the sidelines,” he stated, advocating for active engagement in promoting Africa’s interests.
Delegates endorsed a new CoSPAL constitution and elected a leadership team of five regional Vice-Chairs and a Secretary-General to work alongside Bagbin, supporting CoSPAL’s mission to advocate for African priorities globally. The assembly also explored ways to elevate CoSPAL’s profile, deepen ties with the African Union, and collaborate with other inter-parliamentary organizations.
The assembly ended with a communique and plans for the next session, charting a unified course for legislative progress across Africa.
