President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has set up a five-member ministerial ad-hoc committee to assess the government’s current efforts in combating illegal small-scale mining, also known as ‘galamsey’.
This decision was communicated in a statement issued on September 13, signed by Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar.
The formation of the committee is in response to continued appeals from various organizations and individuals urging the government to escalate its actions in addressing the galamsey issue.
One of these appeals was made by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana, representing Organised Labour.
They emphasized the necessity for immediate and decisive government intervention to combat illegal mining, citing its significant environmental and economic impacts.
The battle against galamsey has been a key focus of President Akufo-Addo’s administration. However, the President has acknowledged that there is still much more work to be done to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
