The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has raised concerns about the government’s fiscal strategy ahead of the 2025 budget presentation.
In a post on X, Mr. Ahiagbah noted that the Finance Minister has so far demonstrated “excellent political optics” and suggested that some existing taxes may be withdrawn, in line with a promise made by former President John Mahama.
He, however, posed critical questions regarding revenue generation, expenditure cuts, and economic growth policies.
“I am looking forward to answering the following questions: What alternative revenue sources will the government implement to compensate for the withdrawn taxes, and how do we plan to achieve the proposed tax-to-GDP ratio of 18% mentioned by the Finance Minister during his vetting?” he wrote.
Mr. Ahiagbah also questioned which areas of government expenditure would be affected by the austerity measures promised by the president and sought clarity on strategies to stimulate production, create jobs, and drive economic growth.
His comments come as the government is set to present its budget, with expectations high on how it will balance revenue mobilization with economic relief measures.
