Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly condemned what he views as an increasing intolerance toward free speech under the current government. He warned that Ghana risks undermining its democratic values if it continues to silence citizens who speak out or expose wrongdoing.

“This government acts tyrannically when it prevents citizens from questioning authority or blowing the whistle,” Ahiagbah declared. “President John Dramani Mahama must not sit idly by and watch our country fall into that abyss.”

Ahiagbah’s comments respond to recent actions against Dr. Ntim Fordjour, whose right to free speech he believes faces political suppression. He argued that silencing Fordjour could set a dangerous precedent.

“If we let political motives curtail Ntim Fordjour’s right to free speech, we’ll soon justify silencing John Doe because he belongs to the NDC,” Ahiagbah warned. “Is that the kind of democracy we want to build?”

He urged Ghanaians and political leaders alike to protect free speech and reaffirm Ghana’s democratic foundation.

“We must send a clear message to this government—and future ones—that the right to free speech is absolute and untouchable. This is a democracy, and we must defend that right at all costs.”
