The release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results faces potential delays due to outstanding government debt to the West African Examination Council (WAEC), totaling GH₵166 million.
WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, revealed that the council owes over GH₵4 million to invigilators, supervisors, and script checkers.
He noted that, to date, the government has only disbursed one-third of WAEC’s GH₵186 million budget for 2024, with GH₵40.4 million in arrears still outstanding from previous years.
This situation, Kapi cautioned, may impact the timely release of the examination results unless the payments are made soon.
Responding to these concerns, the Education Ministry has assured the public of efforts to address the issue. Ministry spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng disclosed that GH₵15 million was recently allocated to WAEC and additional payments are in progress to prevent any disruption in result distribution.
“We want to reassure parents and candidates that no delays are expected,” Kwarteng stated, emphasizing the Ministry’s ongoing collaboration with WAEC.
He explained that while government payments to WAEC are typically made after examinations, steps are being taken to fulfill the financial obligations promptly.
