Vehicle Emmision Levy is unnecessary – Nana B
The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye also known as Nana B is calling for the withdrawal of the controversial Emission Levy imposed by the NPP government.
He argues that implementing this new levy will worsen the already difficult economic conditions in the country, and believes that the timing is inappropriate.
Introduced on February 1, 2024, the government’s new tax policy on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions for internal combustion engine vehicles has faced opposition from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other stakeholders.
In an interview with Accra-based Peace FM on Friday, February 2, Nana B called on President Akufo-Addo to instruct the Finance Minister to withdraw the levy.
Nana B asserts that emission levies are typically imposed on developed nations that have embraced electric cars as a means to address climate change. He suggests that the government should consider the sentiments of the people and find a balance between revenue generation and public opinion by retracting the tax.
The introduction of the Emission Levy aims to encourage the use of eco-friendly technologies and green energy to achieve net zero targets.
The amount to be paid for the Vehicle Emissions Levy depends on the type of vehicle and its engine capacity.
