The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suffered a series of high-profile losses in the 2024 parliamentary elections, as several prominent Members of Parliament were unseated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC). These defeats signal a potential shift in Ghana’s political landscape, with only a few NPP MPs managing to hold onto their constituencies.
Key Losses for the NPP
Among the most notable casualties is KT Hammond, the long-serving MP for Adansi Asokwa. Hammond polled 13,275 votes but was edged out by the NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani, who won with 14,229 votes. Mensah Abraham Justice of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) garnered just 346 votes.
Dakoa Newman, the MP for Okaikwei South, also lost her seat, joining the list of prominent NPP figures defeated in this election.
Another shock came in Ablekuma West, where Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, a long-serving MP and a key figure in the NPP, secured only 26,575 votes. She was defeated by the NDC’s Rev Kweku Addo, who won the seat with 31,866 votes.
In Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey was unseated by the NDC’s Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu. Quartey received 23,345 votes compared to Tubazu’s 29,755. The total votes cast in the constituency amounted to 53,550, with 287 declared invalid.
The NPP also faced a major setback in Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, where Sylvester Tetteh lost to Okle Felix Akwetey of the NDC. Akwetey secured a decisive victory with 37,473 votes against Tetteh’s 27,888.
In Dormaa East, Twum Barima narrowly lost his seat, polling 12,050 votes to the NDC’s Rachel Owusuaa, who received 12,310 votes.
NDC Gains Strength
The NDC’s success in key constituencies has underscored its growing momentum and dealt a heavy blow to the NPP. The results reflect a changing political dynamic, with the NPP facing mounting challenges in retaining its stronghold.
The outcome calls for serious introspection within the NPP as the party navigates the evolving political landscape and reassesses its strategy moving forward.
