Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has ordered the expulsion of Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, following a comment perceived as disrespectful.
The incident occurred during a session discussing President Akufo-Addo’s nomination of two justices to the Supreme Court. The speaker had urged Parliament to consider the full composition of the Supreme Court once the Appointments Committee submitted its report on the nominees.
Dr. Afriyie responded critically, asserting that it was not the Speaker’s place to make such remarks. “As a representative of the people of Sefwi-Wiawso, it is not your place to remind us of these matters,” he said.
Offended by Dr. Afriyie’s comment, the speaker described it as rude and disrespectful. He then directed the Marshal to escort Dr. Afriyie out of the chamber. “This is an utterly disrespectful comment,” he stated. “I have the authority to remove you from this House. You represent Sefwi-Wiawso, but I represent the entire nation. Marshal, please remove him. I will not tolerate such disrespect.”
In response to the incident, Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh apologized on behalf of the caucus. He acknowledged the Speaker’s guidance and leadership, especially during tense moments in the House.
“Speaker, we appreciate your wisdom and leadership,” Annoh-Dompreh said. “What transpired earlier was unfortunate. On behalf of the entire caucus and our colleague, I extend our sincere apologies to you and your office. We hope this apology will resolve the matter.”
The apology aimed to mend the rift and restore decorum in the parliamentary proceedings.
