Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has warned that registering minors to vote is tantamount to endangering their career lifespan as it means they would have to retire earlier even when they have not genuinely attained the retirement age of 60 years.
Speaking to journalists after touring some voter registration centres in Accra, Dr Bawumia said that it’s not only criminal to do so but also dangerous to the future of these minors when you register them at this stage.
He noted that these minors would enter into our record books at a particular age and consequently retire at a very early age, which will have destroyed their future and entreated parents to be mindful of this problem.
This caution comes at a time where there have been several reports of minors being registered in some centres in the country. It is therefore important that parents and guardians understand how dangerous this act poses on the future of these innocent children.
There have also been calls for an integration or merger of the databases of the National Identification Authority and that of electoral commission of Ghana as it can help weed out some of these applicants and prevent them form registering.
The Limited Voters Registration exercise commenced on 12th September 2023 and expected to end on 2nd October 2023. By the end of the exercise the Electoral Commission of Ghana seeks to register about 1.35 million Ghanaians who are 18 years and above and other eligible persons who could not register in 2020.
