President Akufo Addo says he is in support of the regional rotation of the Independence Day celebration. The commemoration that was previously only held in the nation’s capital Accra was changed in 2019.
Ghana marked her 62nd and 63rd celebrations in the Northern Regional capital -Tamale and the Ashanti capital – Kumasi respectively when the idea of rotation was born by the ruling NPP government 5 years ago.
This initiative was applauded by many saying it offers major potential to promote regional balance and equity in the allocation of resources for infrastructural development in the country.
Earlier today at the 67th Independence Day Celebration in Koforidua with the theme “OUR DEMOCRACY, OUR PRIDE”, the President pointed at the need for the changes in venue saying “The rotation has certainly turned out to be a welcome and also nation-building exercise, that helps to focus attention on a different region every year, and, at the same time, rallies the nation together”.
The Eastern Region, was the home of three (3) members of the BIG SIX of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) – Joseph Boakye Danquah, Edward Akufo-Addo, and William Ofori-Atta.
