In his penultimate State of the Nation Address, President Akufo-Addo lauded his government’s achievements in education, emphasizing high enrollment rates under his administration. The flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) program stands out as a catalyst, ushering countless families into the realm of senior high education for the first time.

The transformative impact of Free SHS extends beyond mere enrollment figures, shedding light on the previously overlooked issue of students who would have prematurely ended their formal education after junior high school. President Akufo-Addo urged an end to political bickering and criticism surrounding the program, urging collective efforts to enhance its efficacy.

Recognizing the interconnection of educational levels, the President advocated for unity and collaboration across kindergarten, primary, and junior high sectors to fortify the foundation of Free SHS.

Furthermore, the government’s commitment to advancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) was underscored, with efforts underway to integrate TVET seamlessly into the Free SHS framework.

As demand for tertiary education surged among SHS graduates, the government embarked on the construction of four new tertiary universities nationwide, demonstrating proactive measures to accommodate this influx.

Together with this, the allocation of resources for the establishment of 10 schools dedicated to enhancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education across the country reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to holistic educational development.

President Akufo-Addo’s address signals a monumental leap forward in Ghana’s educational landscape, characterized by inclusivity, innovation and a steadfast resolve to equip the nation’s youth with the skills needed to thrive in the 21st century.
