Parliament’s Health Committee has expressed disapproval over the abrupt closure of the Renal Unit at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, a decision that has resulted in the tragic deaths of three kidney patients.
The unit was shut down nearly two weeks ago without any official explanation, prompting widespread outrage. Baffour Ahenkorah, President of the Kidney Patients Association, confirmed that three patients had died following the closure.
Alexander Roosevelt, Member of Parliament for Central Tongu and a member of the Health Committee, voiced his shock and disappointment in an interview with Citi News.
He recalled that the National Insurance Authority had recently requested 2 million cedis to support kidney patients under 18 and over 60 and had announced an additional 2 million cedis to settle the bills of renal patients at Korle-Bu Hospital.
“I am surprised to learn that the unit has been closed due to a lack of medical supplies,”he said.
Alexander Roosevelt questioned the National Insurance Authority’s claims, asking if their statements were fictional.
“Is this where Ghana has reached? It’s a very serious situation. How can we joke with the health of our own people?” he added, criticizing the promises of the presidential candidate of the NPP amidst the ongoing health crisis.
