Parliament will hold its first sitting today, December 16, 2024, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). This comes after Ghana’s pivotal December 7 elections, which reshaped the political landscape.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) now holds a parliamentary majority, with notable New Patriotic Party (NPP) figures, including Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Henry Quartey, KT Hammond, and Andy Appiah-Kubi, losing their seats. The NDC’s electoral success also extended to the presidency, where John Dramani Mahama defeated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
This session follows a December 11 circular from the Speaker’s Office confirming the venue, a deviation from Parliament’s usual location.
Ahead of the elections, calls from the Majority Caucus for an early recall of Parliament were declined by Speaker Alban Bagbin, who insisted sittings resume post-elections.
