The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of reneging on his campaign promise to revoke Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which permits mining in forest reserves.
In a post on X, Ahiagbah stated that rather than repealing the law as pledged during the 2024 campaign, President Mahama has instead introduced a bill to Parliament seeking only to remove presidential approval for mining leases. He argued that this amendment would not prevent mining in forest reserves but rather reinforce its continuation.
“President Akufo-Addo faced widespread criticism for allowing this law, and President Mahama pledged to revoke it. So, why is Mahama refusing to honor his promise to repeal L.I. 2462?” Ahiagbah questioned.
He called on the President to fulfill his commitment by ensuring the complete revocation of the legislation to protect Ghana’s forest reserves from further destruction.
