The clock is ticking towards the NPP parliamentary primaries on January 27, 2024, and one key seat appears to be a hotly contested one in Ablekuma West between Communications Minister Ursula Owusu Ekuful and Robert Nicol.
Ursula Owusu Ekuful
Ursula Owusu Ekuful, the incumbent MP, who has held the seat since 2013, is engaged in a fierce contest with Robert Nicol, her opponent from the previous election.
In addition to serving three terms as a member of parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu Ekuful holds the important position of Communications and Digitalisation Minister.
Ursula Owusu Ekuful – a technology champion, women’s rights activist and licensed legal expert, was born on October 20, 1964. She has a world of experience in this arena.
In addition to her political abilities, she supports the government’s ICT infrastructure program, which focuses on digitalization, e-government services, and supporting regional tech start-ups.
Mrs Owusu Ekuful has a master’s degree in conflict, peace and security from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center, a certificate in project management and planning from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, and a certificate in government integrity from the International Law Institute in Washington, DC. She graduated from the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law and works as a lawyer, technology champion, and advocate for women’s rights.
Robert Nicol
Robert Nicol is the opponent in the ring and a well-known political figure in Ablekuma West.
Since he joined the NPP campaign team in 2008, Nicol has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to service and contributions.
Nicol has proved his dedication as a party member with a strong work ethic, as evidenced by his activities on the Regional Finance Committee and his ambitions to run for parliament in the 2016 NPP primary.
He also worked extensively for the party prior to and during the general election in 2012 as a member of the Ablekuma West campaign team.
He continued to serve on that campaign team in 2016, where he diligently laboured alongside other devoted party members to make sure the party won power during that year’s general election.
In the 2016 NPP Ablekuma West primary, Nicol sought to be a member of parliament and served as vice chairman of the regional finance committee.
As a part of the 2020 Ablekuma West campaign team, he diligently collaborated with fellow party members to guarantee the party’s continued dominance.
He has contributed significantly to the party on a national, regional, and constituency level.
