Four FM Radio Stations in Bawku, in the Upper East Region, have been closed down by the National Communications Authority (NCA).
This follows recommendations from the Upper East Regional Security Council and with guidance from the Ministry of National Security. Bawku FM, Source FM, Zahra FM, and Gumah FM were all affected by the shutdown.
The decision to close the stations was prompted by concerns surrounding their operations and the remarks made by their panellists and presenters. These remarks are believed to have contributed to the escalation of the Bawku conflict, resulting in loss of lives and property in the area.
The NCA cited Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775) as the basis for its decision. This section grants the Authority the power to suspend or revoke licenses or frequency authorizations when deemed necessary for national security or public interest.
NCA further called on all parties involved to adhere strictly to the regulations governing the communications industry, emphasizing the need for responsible broadcasting practices.
