This Easter period, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a stern warning to road users, stressing the importance of safe driving practices during the holiday season.

In an interview with RGGNEWS, the PRO of the National Road Safety Authority, Pearl Adusu Sateckla stated that, with increased mobility as families travel to reunite and attend various events, there is a heightened risk of accidents and collisions on major highways.

She says one of the primary concerns highlighted by the NRSA is the increased numbers of reckless driving and drinking under the influence during Easter festivities.

She mentioned that, the influx of temporary pubs along travel routes is a temptation for a driver to drink some alcohol before getting behind the wheel, which invariably leads to a crash.

To address these, the NRSA has launched a campaign titled “Stop Speeding, Stay Alive,” in collaboration with stakeholders such as Bloomberg for Global Road Safety.

This initiative aims to educate and sensitize the public on safe driving practices, urging drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid reckless overtaking, and refrain from drinking and driving.

Additionally, she encouraged passengers to speak up if they notice dangerous driving, albeit in a respectful manner.

In an effort to improve road infrastructure and ease traffic flow, the NRSA has partnered with road agencies to repair malfunctioning traffic lights. This is to ensure safer travel conditions for motorists.

Furthermore, she urged that, law enforcement agencies, including the police, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and the National Insurance Commission, actively patrol roads to enforce speed limits and provide guidance to drivers.

Emphasizing that road safety is a collective responsibility, Pearl Sateckla underscored the importance of public awareness and media engagement in promoting safe driving practices.

By raising awareness and setting the agenda, the media can play a crucial role in advocating for safer roads and reducing the risk of accidents during the holidays.

This Easter period, the NRSA urges all road users to prioritize safety, adhere to traffic regulations, and exercise caution while traveling to ensure a peaceful and accident-free holiday season.
