The National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives and supporters were led by ex-President John Dramani Mahama on a sensitization walk to promote his proposed 24-hour economy policy. The walk had significant attendance from NDC members, sympathizers, and members of the public who aligned with the party’s ideology. The primary objective was to generate widespread awareness about the party’s vision for a 24-hour economy in the event of a Mahama victory in the December 7 election.
The walk started at the Aboabo Post Office in the Asokore Mampong Municipality and continued through several areas, including Aboabo No. 2, the Asawase Railway Police Station, the Manhyia Roundabout, Allah Bar, and ‘Dr. Mensah’. The procession ended with a huge rally, which attracted lots of people who cheered as John Mahama addressed them.
The NDC’s plan for the 24-hour economy policy is to transform Ghana into a self-sufficient and export-led economy through a three-shift work schedule. Specific measures to facilitate the functioning of businesses 24 hours a day have been set out by the former president, which includes legal support, tax exemptions, and regulations.
Addressing the gathering, former President John Dramani Mahama criticized Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for failing to fulfill his promise of assisting traders in the Kejetia Market Complex following a fire incident last year. Mr Mahama expressed his concern over the prolonged delay in the completion of the second phase of the Kejetia Market project.
“The government doesn’t deserve another term, because it failed to deliver its promises to the traders after the fire outbreak in the market. The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, reneged on his promise of renovating the market. The market is in a sorry state. Don’t worry, the next NDC government will renovate it for you”.
Mr Mahama also explained the proposed 24-hour economic policy, emphasizing its potential to alleviate Ghana’s unemployment issue.
“24-hour economy is being implemented in other countries. It is not something new at all. Pharmacies, pump stations, and sawmills were all operating when we were all kids. How come some companies now close at 5 pm, 8 pm. Can’t the Kejetia Market operate a 24-hour economy for people to buy stuff? We will provide security and transport for people to work at night. Other measures will be put in place to ensure that the 24-hour economy works”
The event also had in attendance some prominent members of the NDC, including two of Mr Mahama’s contenders in the NDC’s recent presidential primaries, Dr Kwabena Duffuor and Kojo Bonsu. Also seen with the former President was a retired Commissioner of Police, Nathan Kofi Boakye.
