President-elect John Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening relations with China following a courtesy call from Chinese Ambassador Tong Defa. The visit included a congratulatory message from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Highlighting the longstanding cooperation between the two nations, Mr. Mahama noted China’s financing of projects under the Sino-Hydro initiative. However, he acknowledged the impact of Ghana’s debt default on its credit rating and pledged to stabilize the currency, restore economic growth, and lower inflation.
He emphasized the need for closer collaboration with China, stating that post-transition efforts would focus on technical cooperation and exploring opportunities under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Belt and Road Initiative.
