Ghanaian actor and entrepreneur, Mr. John Setor Dumelo, has been elected Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency. Contesting on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he secured 40,561 votes, defeating the incumbent, Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who obtained 27,377 votes.
Independent candidate Abdul Rauf Abugri Mumuni trailed with 189 votes out of a total of 68,384 votes cast. Valid votes amounted to 68,127, while 257 ballots were rejected.
The results reflect a significant shift, with Madam Alhassan losing 12,474 votes compared to her 2020 performance, where she polled 39,851 votes. Meanwhile, Mr. Dumelo improved his 2020 tally of 37,478 votes by 3,083.
On the presidential front, NPP candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured 24,122 votes, while NDC’s John Dramani Mahama led with 41,835 votes. A total of 68,493 votes were cast, with 502 rejected ballots.
Historically, Ayawaso West Wuogon has been a stronghold of the NPP, winning five out of seven elections since its creation in 1992.
