Joachim Awuley Lartey popularly known as Joe Lartey was a Ghanaian broadcaster and sports commentator whose distinctive voice and passionate delivery endeared him to audiences across Africa. Born in 1927 in Accra, Ghana, Lartey’s career spanned several decades, earning him the title “the Doyen of sports broadcasting in Ghana.”
He attended Accra Academy for his secondary education and then went on to study at the University of Ghana, Legon, where he obtained a degree in English.
His journey into broadcasting began in the 1950s when he joined the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), and became synonymous with sports commentary, particularly football, which he covered with unparalleled enthusiasm.
Joe Lartey had a 12 year spell with Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, handling some programmes on Radio Nigeria. He also taught at the FRCN Training School at Ikoyi, where he trained young Nigerian broadcasters public speaking and public relations.
Lartey’s broadcasting style was marked by his rich baritone voice, meticulous attention to detail, and profound knowledge of the sports he covered.
