Mr. Kwame Gyan, the lawyer representing the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo-Dampare, has stated that the chairman of the committee investigating the leaked tape concerning a plot to remove the IGP, Atta Akyea, has transformed the police chief from a victim of the situation into an accused individual.

During an interview with Joy News, Lawyer Kwame Gyan voiced his apprehensions regarding Mr. Atta-Akyea’s behaviour alleging that the committee chairman was making statements that could be seen as prejudicial and might potentially undermine the credibility of the investigation.

Mr. Atta-Akyea, who is also the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, has faced significant scrutiny for his management of the case.

Mr. Gyan accused Mr. Atta-Akyea of conducting himself as if he were the exclusive commissioner overseeing the investigation. He expressed his team’s reluctance to tolerate such a situation in the future.

“He has his own agenda,” Mr. Gyan asserted, hinting that Mr. Atta-Akyea has revealed his biased intentions for all to see.

Lawyer Gyan accused Mr. Atta-Akyea of conducting media interviews following committee meetings and making comments that could be harmful. He alleged that Mr. Atta-Akyea was revealing information that should have been kept confidential during in-camera hearings and was also creating unsubstantiated stories without a factual basis.

“He will be granting media interviews to the extent that after one sitting, he went out there and said the extended tape which was submitted by Bugri Naabu, and had not been played at the committee, has been doctored. Very prejudicial comments,” he said.

The legal counsel for the IGP conveyed his and his client’s respect for Parliament and the committee members, emphasizing that the IGP had demonstrated his humility by appearing before the committee even when it wasn’t strictly necessary.

However, he indicated his intention to take a more assertive legal approach in the future, saying,”Because of respect for Parliament and the institution and persons on the Committee, I drop my guns, but I’m going to do what lawyers do, going forward” Lawyer Gyan stated.

He indicated that he would ensure the chairman adheres to the committee’s mandate, as established by the Speaker of Parliament, to ensure that the committee’s purpose is achieved and nothing beyond that.
