The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, says he is deeply concerned about the current state of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Parliament, with the exit of highly experienced legislators, from Parliament’s next session.
In Parliament’s next session, a chunk of seasoned legislators from both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be missing, from either choosing not to seek re-election or being defeated in their respective parliamentary primaries.
The NPP alone had 28 MPs unable to secure their nomination to represent the party in the 2024 general election, while an additional 18 NPP legislators, including Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu himself who willingly withdrew from the race.
In an interview on GTV Breakfast, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu urged political parties to engage in profound self-examination to address this situation.
“I am worried about the NPP, and I am worried about the Parliament of Ghana, and I am worried about our democracy. The longer a person stays in Parliament, the better the performance of that person. It is for him, it is for his party, it is for Parliament, and it is for our democracy.
Which is why what is happening certainly cannot be good. And I think that the parties, especially NPP and NDC, need to do some serious introspection about what is going on – this constant peeling of MPs,” he stated.
