The High Court in Accra has granted bail to Gregory Afoko, who has been on remand for almost a decade while facing trial over the death of Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Afoko was granted bail on Friday, February 21, 2025, in the sum of GH₵500,000 with two sureties, one of whom must justify with a landed property. He is also required to report regularly to the police investigator handling the case.
His bail application had been repeatedly denied under the previous NPP administration, but this time, the prosecution did not oppose it, after the defence demonstrated their ability to meet the conditions.
Afoko and his co-accused, Asabke, who was earlier convicted and sentenced to death for conspiracy, are currently undergoing a retrial for murder. The case stems from an incident on May 20, 2015, when Mahama was attacked with a substance suspected to be acid, leading to his death.
Afoko, the brother of former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko, has faced two trials—one aborted in 2019 and another that ended in a hung jury in April 2023. The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 5, 2025.
