The Ministry of Roads and Highways has responded to claims made in a recent video posted by Skyy Power 93.5fm, which suggested that the contractor for the PTC Interchange project had abandoned the site due to the government’s indebtedness to the company.
The Ministry has denied these claims, stating that the video contains inaccuracies and distortions regarding the status of the project.
In a statement, the Ministry outlined several key facts to clarify the situation surrounding the PTC Interchange project. The project, which is part of the Sinohydro Master Project Support Agreement between the Government of Ghana and the People’s Republic of China, commenced in December 2020. It was initially scheduled to be completed by June 2023.
The Ministry explained that work on the PTC Interchange was suspended in December 2022 as a result of the government’s Debt Restructuring Programme. At the time of the suspension, 80% of the physical progress on the project had already been completed.
In September 2024, the contractor requested permission to dismantle formwork on the 3-Tier Interchange due to safety concerns after theft of scaffolding and the deterioration of materials such as wooden formwork and corroded iron rods. The Ministry, citing the contractor’s responsibility for site safety and public protection, granted permission for the removal of the formwork.
The Ministry further explained that following the successful completion of the government’s Debt Exchange Programme, discussions are ongoing with contractors to resume work on various projects, including the PTC Interchange.
The Ministry assured the public that work is already underway on other key infrastructure projects such as the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Phase II, the Tema-Akosombo Road Project, and the Tema-Aflao Road Project.
The government has also stated its commitment to completing the PTC Interchange, with ongoing efforts to secure funding to ensure its timely completion.
“The Ministry wishes to assure the people of Sekondi-Takoradi and the public that the government is committed to completing the PTC Interchange project. The government is exploring all funding options available to ensure the project’s timely completion.”
