The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has praised the Ghana Police Service for the arrest and prosecution of a key suspect linked to the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. He has been remanded into police custody and is scheduled to reappear in court on April 1, 2025.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Kofi Yeboah, the GJA described the development as a significant step in the long-standing pursuit of justice for the slain journalist. The association commended the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for what it called a “giant step” toward resolving the case.

“For more than six years since the assassination of Ahmed Suale, this is the first time the police have made a significant impact in bringing the suspected killers of the investigative journalist to face justice,” the statement read.

The GJA noted that the arrest follows persistent calls for action on the case, which has contributed to Ghana’s declining ranking on the World Press Freedom Index.

While welcoming the breakthrough, the association urged the police to ensure that all individuals connected to the crime are brought to justice.

“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale,” the statement added.

The GJA also reiterated its commitment to monitoring the case and warned that if concrete progress is not made by the end of March 2025, it would escalate the matter to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice.

The association further disclosed plans to engage police leadership for updates on this case and other unresolved attacks on journalists, including that of Joy FM’s Latif Iddrisu, which may also be referred to the ECOWAS Court.

Meanwhile, the GJA has alerted its international partners — the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) — about the arrest and prosecution. Both organizations have pledged their support and expressed readiness to escalate the case to other international platforms.

Ahmed Suale, a member of Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI team, was assassinated in Madina, Accra, on January 16, 2019. His killing followed the public exposure of his identity after an investigative documentary on corruption in Ghanaian football.
