Parliament has officially enacted the Ghana Shippers Authority Bill 2024, a legislative move to regulate and standardise shipping charges, fees, and requirements imposed by service providers.
The Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament highlighted the fragmented nature of the country’s shippers, who lack sufficient bargaining power against powerful multinational shipping companies, often leading to unfair practices.
The committee’s report emphasized that the dominance of these multinational companies in port operations has resulted in exorbitant fees for port users, thereby increasing the cost of shipping and trade for local businesses.
The newly passed bill seeks to address these issues by ensuring fair and transparent pricing, protecting local businesses from exploitative practices.
During the parliamentary session, Speaker Alban Bagbin announced, “Honourable members, the Ghana Shippers Authority Bill 2024 has been read for the third time and is hereby passed.”
