Encroachment of concessions of large-scale mining companies and fiscal issues remain a challenge in the mining sector. Lands and Natural Resources Minister Samuel Jinapor believes if mining companies and the Chamber of Mines make development of the communities in their catchment areas a priority, their operations and socio-economic projects in those communities will help to reduce the encroachment and illegal activities in the area.
There are almost daily reports of wanton destruction of the environment from Illegal mining and encroachment on Mining concessions. With enough resources, strong will and protection, stakeholders in the Mining industry believe the activities of illegal mining can be curtailed. Currently some three Aircrafts of the Ghana Air Forces must be repaired to support the fight against illegal mining.
At a first meeting with the Chamber of Mines for 2024, the Lands and Natural Resources Minister Mr Samuel Jinapor commended the Chamber for its contribution in the fight against illegal mining and ensuring steady growth within the mining sector. He said though the Sector in 2023 managed some significant successes despite the economic downturn, 2024 presents an opportunity to escalate and enhance joint efforts for the smooth and productive operations of the large-scale mining companies.
Mr. Jinapor told the Chamber that Government will address concerns raised by stakeholders on the Growth and Sustainability Levy, and the VAT on exploration. The President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines Mr. Joshua Mortoti, projected a significant increase in gold production in 2024, predicting an anticipated increase to 3.5 million ounces mainly due to fresh production from Cardinal Namdini Gold Mine.
