Election 2024: NPP and NDC gear up with renewed policies against corruption.

As the build up to election 2024 draws nigh, the two most prominent political parties the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are the focus of attention as they make their policies known to the electorate.

The fight against corruption remains a crucial issue in Ghana, with both parties recognizing its damaging effects. As the political landscape evolves, it is essential that the discourse on corruption remains objective, evidence-based, and focused on finding effective solutions to this pervasive problem.

In this vein, this article seeks to address the stand of both parties, as well as their messages in the fight against this menace.

The NPP contends that corruption is an endemic problem that cannot be eradicated overnight. They advocate for a balanced approach that involves strengthening anti-corruption institutions, promoting transparency, and educating the public about the consequences of corrupt practices.

In the NPP’s attempt to “break the 8”, Dr. Bawumia believes digitalizing the system would ensure a corruption free society and has therefore taken rigorous steps to have some key sectors digitalised; notable amongst them is DVLA and Ghana Ports.

In recent years, both the NDC and NPP have been embroiled in corruption scandals, leading to a decline in public trust and a demand for greater transparency and accountability. The current government led by the NPP has established the Special Prosecutor’s Office to investigate and prosecute corruption cases but has failed on its mandate while the NDC on the other hand has vowed to strengthen anti-corruption measures if elected.

In contrast, the NDC has historically espoused a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, with its former leaders, Jerry Rawlings and the late Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills known for their harsh stance against perceived graft. The party believes that corruption undermines trust in government, hinders economic growth, and exacerbates poverty.

Delivering his new year message to the country earlier this year, the former President and Presidential candidate of the NDC stated “I am passionate about the fight against corruption and uprooting poor governance to ensure that our resources are used responsibly and ethically. I firmly believe a transparent and accountable government is essential for building trust and confidence in our institutions”.

“We would hold to account members of this administration who have abused the public trust by misconducting themselves in office. But more importantly, we would also allow unfettered space for the anti-corruption agencies to deal with anyone who abuses the public trust under my administration”.

Speaking with the Clergy on Monday, Mr. Mahama pledged to lead a new charge in the fight against corruption if re-elected as President. “The next NDC government would set a new standard in the fight against corruption, including holding corrupt appointees in the administration accountable”.
