EC Begins Voter Registration Ahead of 2024 General Election
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Electoral Commission has opened the voters register today, May 7, 2024, to capture, especially, first time voters in December’s national exercise. The EC says this crucial voter registration exercise is to prepare for the 2024 General Election. By this exercise, the EC says, mandated by Article 45 of the 1992 Constitution, the books will remain open for 21 days, concluding on May 27, 2024.

Across the country, registration is scheduled to take place at the 268 District Offices of the Commission from 0700 to 1800 hours daily during the stipulated period. Furthermore, mobile teams will be deployed to register voters in 785 polling stations located in remote areas and 25 public universities with resident students.

The registration drive aims to include Ghanaians who have turned 18 since the last registration in September 2023, as well as those over 18 who missed the previous exercise.

Mrs. Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, assured that all logistical arrangements are in place for a smooth registration process nationwide.

Mrs. Mensa disclosed that the EC targets to register 622,000 new voters and has trained and deployed 3,277 electoral officers for this purpose. Mobile teams will spend two days at selected polling stations and three days at public universities, with their movement plans accessible on the EC’s website to facilitate tracking and access.

In her assurance, Mrs. Mensa stated, “We have effectively distributed all our materials to the regions and districts, and we are confident that there will be no shortage. Additionally, our biometric voter registration kits, along with spare kits for backup, have been distributed to the regions and districts.”
