Following an emergency National Security meeting chaired by the President on October 28, 2024, the government has announced a curfew in Bawku, which will be in effect from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
This decision comes in response to escalating disturbances linked to the return of Mr. Seidu Abagre, who was controversially enskinned as Bawku Naba in February 2023.
Mr. Abagre returned on October 24 after a Court of Appeal ruling in Kumasi vacated his arrest warrant. Since then, the area has experienced significant unrest, resulting in numerous fatalities and raising concerns about potential escalation beyond Bawku.
In a statement, the government noted that assessments from national security agencies indicate that Mr. Abagre’s continued presence in the region poses a substantial threat to public safety. Therefore, the imposition of the curfew aims to restore order and ensure the safety of residents.
The government has reiterated its commitment to taking all necessary measures to protect the people of Bawku and surrounding areas. Security forces have been instructed to strictly enforce the curfew and maintain law and order.
Residents are urged to comply with the curfew and cooperate with security agencies to help restore peace. Violators of the curfew will face legal consequences. The government has indicated that further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
