The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to engage mining companies in Obuasi to repurpose abandoned shafts for community mining initiatives, a plan aimed at revitalizing economic activity and creating jobs in local mining communities.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in the Obuasi East and Obuasi West constituencies, Dr. Bawumia assured local chiefs and residents of his commitment to innovative projects that support commercial growth and employment.
Obuasi East and Obuasi West, two key mining communities, hosted traditional authorities, religious leaders, professional bodies, and mining groups, where discussions centered on the impact of mining on residents’ lives.
Nana Keteke Apenteng, Dompaase Kontihene, praised the government for revitalizing the AngloGold Ashanti Gold Mine, while appealing to Dr. Bawumia to ensure, if elected, that local residents benefit from employment opportunities in the mines. Dr. Bawumia pledged to advocate for local engagement with AngloGold Ashanti, reinforcing his commitment to community-centered development.
Following the stakeholder discussions, Dr. Bawumia moved to the St. Philips Catholic School’s forecourt for a large community rally, where he addressed thousands of NPP supporters, urging them to vote for the NPP in the upcoming elections. He highlighted the NPP’s role in restoring AngloGold Ashanti’s operations, describing it as evidence of the party’s dedication to local prosperity.
Later, Dr. Bawumia met with young people in Obuasi West, where he reiterated his commitment to negotiating the release of unused mining shafts for community use, promising to work alongside mining companies to bring economic benefits to the area. He urged constituents to support his presidential bid and vote for NPP parliamentary candidates in Obuasi East and Obuasi West.
