It is a move to improve the living standards of security personnel in the country. On Tuesday in Accra, the President, Nana Akufo-Addo inaugurated 320 new housing units for the Ghana Police Service at the Police Training School in Tesano.
At the ceremony, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of the project. “This milestone is not just a testament to our determination to improve the living standards of our security personnel but also a key step forward in our national quest for enhancing security and safety,” he stated.
President Akufo-Addo also commended Commissioner of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno on his promotion to Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP) with responsibility for operations. “I have no doubt that, as in the past, the Deputy IGP will be a good team player and contribute his full quota to the flourishing of an effective, efficient police service,” he added.
The project, known as the “Security Services Housing Project,” was initiated in 2018 to provide decent housing for the nation’s security forces to symbolize the Government’s resolve to ensure that those who risk their lives daily to protect us have a fixed and comfortable place to call home.
He emphasized the importance of adequate housing for security personnel, noting that it enhances their morale and improves their effectiveness in maintaining law and order.
The housing units include 112 two-bedroom apartments and 208 three-bedroom apartments, along with an office manse, a social center, two multi-purpose playgrounds, and a kindergarten.
The project is to create an environment where police officers can focus more on their duties rather than worrying about their living conditions.
Inspector General of Police Dr George Akuffo Dampare expressed the police service’s gratitude. “We are happy as a police service and will forever be grateful,” he said. “We are committed to going the extra mile to show our appreciation by working diligently to become the best institution in the country and a reference point.”
Minister for the Interior Henry Quartey also at the event, urged police officers and other security agencies to continue working hard to keep the country safe and prosperous.
He highlighted the need to maintain the new facilities, urging the IGP to ensure that the buildings remain clean and well-maintained.
The minister also announced that a fire station would be established within the police unit to attend to emergencies swiftly.
The president said, the inauguration of these housing units marks a significant step in the government’s broader agenda to ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of their profession, has access to decent and affordable housing.
