The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called on Ghanaians to exercise patience and allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to officially announce the results of the December 7 general elections.
The appeal follows rising tensions, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) demanding greater transparency in the electoral process.
At a post-election briefing on December 8, CODEO highlighted the importance of maintaining trust in the constitutional framework. The coalition described the EC’s handling of polling station arrangements and ballot counting as largely credible.
According to CODEO, 99% of political party agents and all presiding officers at polling stations nationwide signed the parliamentary results declaration forms, reflecting broad confidence in the process.
The organization also reported receiving complete data from its representative sample of 1,500 polling stations across all regions and constituencies. This data, collected as part of its Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) process, is intended to serve as an independent verification of the EC’s eventual announcement.
In a statement, CODEO assured Ghanaians of the system’s integrity:
“The EC’s arrangements, from polling station setup to ballot counting, were generally adequate and credible. Our PVT findings will provide an impartial verification of the presidential results once declared by the EC.”
CODEO commended the peaceful conduct of the elections, acknowledging the efforts of the EC, security forces, media, political parties, and voters. The group also noted the early concession by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as a positive gesture towards upholding democratic principles.
While awaiting the EC’s official announcement, CODEO urged citizens to remain calm and uphold Ghana’s democratic values.
