The industrial action by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) is beginning take a toll on Ghanaians as the labour union protests against the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as Registrar of the Births and Deaths registry.
CLOGSAG served notice of the strike following the appointment of Mr. Botchway. The association opposed the appointment on grounds that Mr. Botchway is politically exposed.
Though the government urged CLOGSAG to rescind it decision, minister of state in-charge of government communications Felix Ofosu Kwakye dismissed the grounds for the objection arguing that Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway is more than qualified to head the Briths and Deaths and Registry.
He argued further at a press conference that no law bars the births and deaths registry from been headed by a politically exposed person.
Despite the appeal, CLOGSAG via a statement by its Executive Secretary called on its members to adhere to the strike directive from Thursday, February 20, 2025.
The statement referenced a meeting attended by Mr. Botchway at the ministry of local government, chieftaincy and religious affairs as evidence of his continuous role in that capacity.
A visit to some state agencies in parts of the country reveal that the strike is in full force. There are signs of no activity as the offices are locked.
Meanwhile patrons of these offices have been left stranded.
Some applicants at the births and death registry spoke to the media on how negatively the strike is impacting them.
