The Ghana Health Service has confirmed cases of cholera in the Ada West and Ada East districts of the Greater Accra Region. The first case was reported on 4 October 2024, when a patient from Ada West presented with vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain after attending a funeral in Ada East. By 11 October, nine cases had been confirmed in the two districts.
Public health officials have since launched an urgent response, activating emergency management committees at all levels. A multi-sectoral rapid response team, comprising health officials, civic education representatives, and disaster management authorities, has been deployed to contain the spread.
Key response activities include an ongoing outbreak investigation, contact tracing, and daily active community case searches. Health workers in the affected areas have been sensitised on cholera case definitions, sample management, and infection prevention practices. Public education campaigns focusing on safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene are underway, and potable water is being distributed to the affected areas.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines as they work to contain the outbreak. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with key partners, has assured that all necessary measures are in place to control the situation and safeguard public health.
