CETAG Declares Indefinite Strike

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has announced an indefinite strike involving all 46 public colleges of education in the country, effective from today Friday, June 14th, 2024.

The declaration, made in accordance with Article 15 Section 3 of the CETAG Constitution, points at the urgent need to address longstanding grievances regarding compensation and labour rights.
CETAG members are demanding the implementation of decisions and orders issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC), which have remained unresolved despite previous agreements.

Key issues prompting the strike action include the failure of the employer to comply with NLC decisions regarding compensation for additional duties performed in 2022, application of agreed rates of allowances, and the implementation of the completed Staff Audit exercise.
Despite CETAG’s efforts to ensure compliance, the employer has repeatedly failed to act, necessitating further action.

Furthermore, the failure to pay deserving members a top-up of research allowance as arrears from the 2023 Condition of Service (CoS) agreement, and unilateral decisions by the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) regarding office-holding positions and allowances, have contributed to growing discontent among CETAG members.

Efforts to resolve these issues through dialogue have proved futile, with CETAG’s appeals to the NLC for enforcement of its orders going unanswered since November 2023.

In light of these unresolved grievances, CETAG has called on all members to fully comply with the indefinite strike, withdrawing teaching and related services until their demands are met. The association remains resolute in its commitment to securing fair treatment and just compensation for its members, emphasizing the importance of upholding labour rights and collective bargaining agreements.
