The Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwah, has pointed out that the exit of Alan Kyerematen from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary had an impact on both Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong.

Mr Dankwah said that the votes from Alan’s supporters played a significant role in the outcome of the election for both candidates.

“There was an Alan effect everywhere. If you look at the success of Bawumia and even Kennedy, they all benefitted from Alan’s exit from the race because the polls show that about a third of Alan’s supporters voted for Bawumia and the other two-thirds voted for Kennedy. So they both benefitted from Alan’s exit,” he said in a Citi TV interview on Monday, November 6.

In the NPP’s flagbearer election for the 2024 general elections, Dr Bawumia emerged victorious with 118,210 votes, representing 61.47%. His closest rival, Mr. Agyapong, garnered 71,996 votes, representing 37.41%.

Dr Bawumia secured the majority of votes in 14 out of the 16 regions across the country, while Kennedy Agyapong won in the remaining Central and Volta regions.

Meanwhile, the NPP has dismissed the notion that it was pressured to choose Dr Bawumia as its first non-Akan flagbearer in the 2024 election. They emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s election was based on his merit and not influenced by any perception of the party being Akan-dominated.

National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, highlighted Dr Bawumia’s attributes and his ability to connect with people as key factors contributing to his success.

He also acknowledged Dr Bawumia’s significant sacrifices in his political journey, having served as a running mate for nearly 12 years before becoming Vice President.
