Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, has strongly condemned an alleged attempted raid by individuals claiming to be officials of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), describing the act as political persecution.
In a statement released early Thursday, Dr. Bawumia revealed that he visited Hon. Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South and Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior, shortly after the attempted raid.
“Rev. Fordjour was in high spirits and undaunted,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “I urge all Party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution.”
He used the opportunity to renew his call to President John Dramani Mahama to take urgent action to address the conduct of state security personnel.
“I wish to reiterate my earlier submission to the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to immediately rein in his security operatives,” he said. “State institutions must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents.”
Dr. Bawumia warned against what he described as a dangerous slide into lawlessness and the abuse of state power.
“Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear,” he cautioned. “Our democracy is hinged on due process and the rule of law.”
