Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to prioritize the concerns and aspirations of Ghana’s youth, focusing on job creation and economic transformation under his leadership.
During the Youth Connect event held at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra, Dr. Bawumia expressed his commitment to creating sustainable employment opportunities. “When I say that your aspirations are my top priorities, I mean it with all sincerity,” he stated, outlining a vision to generate close to four million jobs through pro-business policies.
Reflecting on Ghana’s economic struggles, including prolonged power outages experienced during the previous administration, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the choice voters face on December 7: to pursue a path of innovation and growth or revert to “past failures.” He assured that youth voices would shape his government’s policies and promised an inclusive environment where young people would actively participate in decision-making.
Central to his job creation strategy, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the expansion of educational access, increasing university accommodations through private sector partnerships, and providing scholarships for persons with disabilities. He underscored the importance of safeguarding the Free SHS and TVET programs, which have improved enrollment and gender parity.
Dr. Bawumia also outlined a plan to strengthen public-private cooperation, with the private sector contributing around three percent of government expenditure annually to create more fiscal space. His vision for healthcare includes the completion of the Agenda 111 hospitals, which will create thousands of jobs in the health sector, and ensuring that each district has accessible healthcare services.
For economic empowerment, he proposed a “Buy Ghana First” initiative, the establishment of a dedicated SME Bank, and the development of Special Economic Zones in border towns. His agricultural plans include setting up mechanization centers and irrigation projects to support large-scale farming.
In the housing sector, Dr. Bawumia committed to providing social and affordable housing for low-income workers. He also vowed to optimize Ghana’s natural resources through sustainable practices and promote local ownership.
To support the digital economy, Dr. Bawumia proposed creating a National Robotics, Engineering, and AI Laboratory, establishing a $100 million Fintech Fund for Ghanaian startups, and removing import duties on mobile devices. He reiterated his plan to abolish the e-Levy, promoting greater digital adoption.
“My plan for job creation isn’t just economic; it’s a call to action for Ghanaian youth to shape the nation’s future,” he affirmed, as young people from all 16 regions participated in the event virtually.
